This week I had early mornings in the town of Metcalfe as I was working on a dairy farm. The farm had a total of 70 miking cows. Everyday we started milking at 5 am and 5 pm. I started the week with just learning the ropes, which included how to attach the milking machines, how to run the feed car and clipping cattle. Some of the cattle have some very delightful personalities.Â
A typical day for me entailed milking cows, feeding 72 heifers, clipping cows throughout the day, feeding milking cows and then milking. It was really interesting to see how the day was spread out as we had breaks part way through the day. That, however, was due to the fact that the days were so long. So even though we were working for about 8 hours it was spread out over a span of 14.
On the weekend I got to go to an open house of a dairy farm that had robots. The robots seem pretty efficient and a cool idea. I also went square dancing at a 4-H Social with the kids from the farm. I learned 4-H is way different in that area. There 4-H year is over a course of roughly 3 months with no record books or diaries. The main goal in that area is to have 4-H as a way for kids to socialize. I expected 4-H to be different but was surprised at just how different it was.Â
While I was on the farm a calf was born. She was definitely a cutie, that's for sure. Within a few hours she was doing her best to try and stand up on her own. Due to Charlie and the other dog (Lucky) not cooperating we unfortunately did not get to stay for the 3 months as originally planned. So now Charlie and I are changing our plans and looking for a new place to stay in the winter. Stay posted to see where we end up.
